Module 1: What is Leadership?

Course Description

This foundational module introduces the concept, theories, and frameworks of leadership. It explores effective and ineffective leadership behaviors and differentiates between transactional and transformational leadership, situating both within African philosophical traditions and inclusive leadership practices.

Overview

This introductory module defines leadership and highlights its importance in organisations. It explores leadership frameworks by various scholars and provides practical approaches to leadership. It also examines leadership behaviours, theories, and styles including Great Man, Trait, Behavioural, Situational, Contingency, Transactional, and Transformational theories.

The module further distinguishes between transactional and transformational leadership and their application in Nigeria. It also explores leadership styles such as authoritarian, democratic, bureaucratic, laissez-faire, people-oriented, task-oriented, and servant leadership.

Finally, it introduces African philosophical perspectives on leadership and emphasizes inclusive leadership approaches.
